Hinterglemmer Bauernherbst: Salzburgian Harvest Celebration

Or: How we celebrate the 5th season!

Into your lederhosen, get set, go! The Bauernherbst (farmers’ autumn) is just around the corner and leads from the mountain pastures right down to the village. As a true Hinterglemm native, our hotel in Saalbach Hinterglemm naturally puts me right in the thick of things when it comes to ringing in the so-called 5th season. From mid-August to the end of October, we celebrate the golden time when the dairymen return to the valley with their animals from the alpine summer and the farmers proudly bring in the last harvest of the year. A true cultural festival.

Atypically Varied: What is the Bauernherbst?

The Bauernherbst is a well-deserved moment of peace and celebration, of enjoying and sitting together between the hard work of summer and the cold of winter. At the same time, it is a time of festivals and markets, an opportunity to share regional songs, arts, and traditions with locals and guests:

  • No Bauernherbst without farmers’ festivals and delicious delicacies from the region: jams from the last fruit harvest, fresh juices, schnapps, and bacon can all be found at the market.
  • Hosts offer local delicacies such as beer meat dumplings, venison, and deer dishes — sometimes even fresh from our hunting grounds — it doesn’t get any more traditional and sustainable than this!
  • Craftsmanship is never neglected: many farmers and farm producers showcase creative carving or woodturning, lace-making or traditional quill embroidery.

For us in Hinterglemm, this is a reason to unpack our traditional costumes, mingle with the locals, celebrate our culture and toast to a time when stress was still a foreign word.

Salzburg and the World: Together at the Bauernherbst

I always find it particularly fascinating how guests from all over the world can get involved in our customs and traditions. Many simply join in and allow themselves to be carried away and enchanted by the hustle and bustle, the music, the freshly distilled schnapps and the aroma of good Salzburgian food. I also find myself looking at my own region with entirely new eyes.

Atypical Morning After: My Repair-Hike

It can sometimes happen that people drink too much at one of these farmer’s parties and don’t say goodbye to their friends until the late hours of the morning. I won’t name any names, but from experience, I know that there is nothing better than going hiking in the mountains in Saalbach Hinterglemm the next morning. After some fresh air, a bit of sweating and airing out my head, and possibly a little nap on an alpine farm meadow, everything is fine again, and I’m fit for the next day at the Bauernherbst in no time. Cheers!
